With pioneering educators, thinkers, and practitioners from around the world, the discussion invites us to cultivate hope in times of crises

Design Investigations presents Possible Futures of (Design) Education, an expansive discussion exploring futures of education, with a specific focus on design.The rapid growth of AI, urgency of climate change and interconnected crises highlight the necessity of radically reimagining education. The monolithic assumptions and goals of education, that have been complicit in shaping the worlds we live in, must be (re)examined and (re)defined to navigate uncertainty. But how? What tools and methodologies can we adopt to go beyond the human-centred approaches and cultivate hope in times of crises?With pioneering educators, thinkers, and practitioners from around the world, this discussion explores possible futures of (design) education which, instead of instigating fear and powerlessness, provoke proactive imaginings into being, inviting students and educators alike to forge different relationships in the present for the future.Following this discussion, two young respondents will share their thoughts, after which the floor will open for questions from the audience, both in person and online. Panellist Profiles:

Zoy Anastassakis (1974) is a Brazilian designer with Greek nationality, and she holds a Master and PhD degree in Anthropology. She was Director at Escola Superior de Desenho Industrial, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2016–18), where, since 2012, she works as Associate Professor, coordinating the research group “Laboratório de Design e Antropologia.” In 2017, as visiting researcher, she joined the project “Knowing from the Inside: Anthropology, Art, Architecture and Design,” lead by Tim Ingold in the Department of Anthropology, University of Aberdeen, Scotland. She is a collaborating researcher at Centro em Rede de Investigação em Antropologia (CRIA) in Lisbon, Portugal. She published Triunfos e Impasses: Lina Bo Bardi, Aloisio Magalhães e o design no Brasil (2014), Refazendo tudo: confabulações em meio aos cupins na universidade (2020), and Everyday acts of design: learning in a time of emergency (2022, with Marcos Martins).

Nana Biamah-Ofosu is an architect, educator, researcher and writer. She is the director of YAA Projects, an architecture practice in London and dedicated to exploring counter-histories, material and diasporic culture, through making, speaking and writing architecture.Recent projects include the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Applied Arts Pavilion, Tropical Modernism: Architecture and Power in West Africa at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition, Venice, Althea McNish: Colour is Mine at the William Morris Gallery in London and the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester as well as the ArchiAfrika Pavilion in Venice, and Common, Communal, Community, an exhibition designed and curated by YAA Projects showing its ongoing research focused on the African compound house as a communal housing typology. As a member of the Curator’s research team for the 18th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, Nana contributed to the articulation of the main exhibition and African Futures Institute’s Pinpoint, a new archive of African and African Diaspora practitioners, whose work engages with the twin issues of decarbonisation and decolonisation.Alongside practice, Nana is an experienced educator and researcher. She teaches at the Architectural Association in London and has lectured widely in U.K and internationally, including at this year’s inaugural Venice Biennale College Architettura. Her current research projects include a study of the African compound housing typology and an ongoing survey of hybridity in diasporic communities. As a writer, she has contributed to several architecture and design publications, engaging with leading practitioners in contemporary practice and defining new paths for a critical, expansive, and open discourse on the built environment.

Rory Hyde is a designer, curator, educator and writer. His work is focused on new forms of design practice for the public good, and redefining the role of the architect today. Hyde is associate professor of architecture, curatorial design and practice at the University of Melbourne, where he leads the design thesis subject, and is developing models for research-led teaching directed to pressing challenges of climate change, social housing, and spatial justice. From 2013 to 2020 he was the curator of contemporary architecture and urbanism at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and a design advocate for the Mayor of London. His writing on architecture and the future of design practice has been featured in various newspapers and journals including The Economist, The Guardian, Harvard Design Magazine, Domus, and Icon. He is the author of Future Practice: Conversations from the Edge of Architecture (2012) and co-editor of Architects After Architecture: Alternative Pathways for Practice (2021).

(Moderator)Anab Jain serves as Professor of <a href="https://designinvestigations.at" title="https://designinvestigations.at" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Design Investigations</a> at the <a href="https://www.dieangewandte.at/institute/design/design_investigations" title="https://www.dieangewandte.at/institute/design/design_investigations" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">University of Applied Arts</a>, Vienna where she leads a culture of radical enquiry in young designers as they explore their changing roles in a complex and uncertain world. The program builds on its history of industrial design, but now encompasses speculative, experience and futures design to catalyse critical thinking and transformative action towards a more hopeful and humane future.An award-winning designer, filmmaker and futurist, Anab is also the co-founder of the vanguard design studio <a href="https://superflux.in/#" title="https://superflux.in/#" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Superflux</a>, whose work has gained international recognition and critical acclaim across commercial, cultural, public and academic sectors. A recipient of the prestigious Royal Designer for Industry RDI Award, Honorary Doctorate, TED Fellowship and more, Anab and her studio’s work has been presented at MoMA New York, La Biennale di Venezia, COP26, Vitra Design Museum, New York Climate Week, V&amp;A London, and Museum of the Future Dubai.

Vanessa de Oliveira Andreotti is the Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria. She is a former Canada Research Chair in Race, Inequalities and Global Change and a former David Lam Chair in Critical Multicultural Education. Vanessa has worked extensively across sectors internationally in areas of education related to global justice, global citizenship, critical literacies, Indigenous knowledge systems and the climate and nature emergency. Vanessa is the author of Hospicing Modernity: Facing humanity's wrongs and the implications for social activism and one of the founders of the Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures Arts/Research Collective.

Fiona Raby is a partner in the design studio Dunne &amp; Raby. She is a University Professor of Design and Social Inquiry, and co-director of the Designed Realities Studio at The New School/Parsons in New York. She is a co-author of Design Noir (2000,2021), and Speculative Everything (2013) and her design projects are in several permanent collections including MoMA in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the MAK in Vienna. In 2021, Fiona was made a Royal Designers for Industry (RDI) and Life fellows of the Royal Society of Arts (UK). Dunne &amp; Raby received the inaugural MIT Media Lab Award (US) in 2015.

Responder Profiles:

Angela Neubauer is a design student at Design Investigations at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna, creating projects aimed to engage and raise questions through the means of design and storytelling. Acknowledging the anxiety felt by her generation about a foreboding future, she recognizes the importance of shifting how we perceive and therefore navigate the landscape of tomorrow. Her ongoing pre-diploma project envisions optimistic futures centred around Austria, exploring how to reshape the narratives around how we work, underlining the necessity of slowing down in a time as urgent as this.

Giovanna de Oliveira Andreotti is a recent graduate in psychology, a dancer and a dedicated dance instructor. Giovanna’s insights on hospicing modernity stem from her upbringing and deep immersion in the zeitgeist of GenZ. As a representative of this generation, she critically embodies their collective aspirations, concerns, frustrations and resilience in the face of a future that feels compromised and stolen.

About the Organiser:

Design Investigations is a multi-disciplinary design education at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna. Led by Univ.Prof. Anab Jain, it builds on a history of industrial design, but expands it with methods and tools that allow for new ways of understanding and engaging with today’s complex realities. The program pursues future-orientated approaches, where students think through making, working hands-on to explore experiential, ecological and speculative dimensions, and to build more-than-human futures. Students are invited to explore the how, what, why and for whom of design, to question the deep-seated assumptions of design to consider everything from data to politics, artificial intelligence to biology as part of the designer’s playing field.
