BRAZIL CALLING

BRAZILIAN MUSIC FESTIVAL

THE SOUND OF FREEDOM IN DICTATORIAL TIMES

The first edition of the Brazilian music festival "Brazil Calling" addresses Brazilian music in the years of dictatorship and its impact on cultural production in the fifth largest country in the world.

The fascination of the music festival lies in the role of music in times of suppression. During the years of dictatorship, the Brazilian population was deprived of its political voice and participation. this fact created a generation of alienated rather than political beings. Music became one of the only means of talking about themes and things that could not be expressed during the period of suppression. This fact helped immensely in the creation of a generation of musicians capable of using music texts as a means of expressing hidden messages.
