About this event

Travel & Outdoor • Hiking

Vienna wears melancholy well – where death sits naturally alongside life.

The locals enjoy funerals and visit cemeteries often, and to be remembered as “a schene Lei” remains an unironic reference to dying well.

A Wiener Linien tram once carried bodies to Zentralfriedhof at night; today a bus still runs through the cemetery, and locals refer to the recently departed as “having taken the 71er.”

Why are there two well-known graveyards in Simmering?

This walk is about exploring death, generosity and how we want to be remembered. Cemeteries represent a biography of the city, and are as much a place for the living as for the dead.
