How to edit & use video content in your research & science communication

SciComm Success

This mini-workshop is all about videos, specifically how to edit them so that you can use them to enliven your social media, blogs & more.

Editing moving messages: how to edit and use video content in your research and science communication

If you have a smartphone, chances are that you can take short and long videos of all sorts of footage: your research group in action, students conducting experiments, your study subjects, interesting reactions in the lab, curious stuff that you find when you’re out and about, snippets of outreach and communication projects AND even you, as a talking head, explaining complex topic in plain, accessible language.

Great! But what happens when you need to tidy up those videos? Add an opening image? Cut out mistakes? Add audio? Export the video to the right format? Compress the video into smaller size? And publish the video online?

That’s what this fast-paced introductory mini-workshop for researchers and scientists is all about. In it, we’ll cover:

Why videos work so well

Where to find tools and tutorials to help you film better videos (this is an editing workshop, not a “how to take videos” workshop)

Tips on filming to make it easier for you to edit material later (this will save you so much time and energy!)

How to use powerful open source (in other words, free to use) software that works on all operating systems (Windows, Apple, Linux)

How to create an introductory and ending frames that you can use for consistency across all your videos.

How to cut frames to remove errors, and use fades to transition between different parts of your video.

How to add static images to your video: to show a photograph, or to highlight something in your video (for example with a circle or some text and an arrow).

How to add music (or an audio file) to your video.

We’ll also discuss sizes, file formats, how to compress your video to make it smaller, and where to publish it (if you don’t already have ideas!)

PLUS: we’ll offer extra tips throughout the session.

There will be ample time for questions and answers, too, so that you can satisfy your curiosity AND learn from what others want to know.

This workshop is great for anyone using social media, or people who want to start creating their own short videos for TikTok, Instagram or YouTube, or folks who want to spice up their blog posts, or researchers interested in doing outreach with youth audiences.

Who this workshop ISN’T for:

As an entry-level editing workshop, this workshop isn’t right for you if:

You consider yourself a video editing and publishing guru.

You have a background in shooting and working with video footage – perhaps from a career in video production or a hobby in your teenage years!

You know who you are :)

What you'll get AFTER the workshop

We will provide you with a recording of the session (minus breakout rooms), plus useful notes, a list of any resources mentioned, and copies of any templates that we provide during the session. If for any reason you can't join us on the day, you'll be able to access the information and exercises in your own time.

Technology and other requirements for this workshop

To participate in this mini-workshop, you’ll need a decent internet connection, a mic (so that you can talk to us), and it would be great if you had video access too, so that we can see you when you talk (although this isn’t essential).

As this is a hands-on session, you will also need to be able to download software to your computer as well as working with files that we provide so that you can build your skills. We typically use the portable version of the software, so no installation rights are needed HOWEVER we recommend that you make sure that you can open and use portable software on your computer. To make the most of this workshop, you need to be working on a computer or a laptop, not a mobile device.

If your technical set-up isn't right for this workshop, we cannot be held responsible.

Run this workshop in-house

This workshop can also be offered for your university, research group and groups involved with the art of bringing research to a wider audience in scientific, research and academic organisations.
Meet Suzanne Whitby, your workshop leader

This workshop will be led by Suzanne Whitby. Suzanne is the founder of SciComm Success and runs workshops to help scientists and researchers share their work with non-experts.

She is also a sustainability and climate change communicator, and in her academic life, she researchers how multi-sensory, storied, landscape-based approaches to climate communication can engage, shift attitudes and drive action.

If you book a place on this workshop, rest assured that it will run. Even if you’re the only person who signs up.

If that happens, you’ll receive a one-to-one session that will cover everything planned in the session, with the chance to get individual input and ideas with no extra charges or hidden fees. We might need a little less time, or we may decide to use the full 90 minutes. That means that you’ll receive the value of a private workshop for the price of a place on a group workshop – you can’t go wrong by signing up.

* The only time we cancel a workshop is if we’re horribly ill or life intervenes in an unexpected way. If that happens, you’ll receive a full refund. We never cancel because of too few people.

Cancellation and refund policy

If we cancel:

We only cancel events in extreme situations (illness, unexpected life events). If we do, you will receive a 100% refund.

If you cancel:

What happens if you need to cancel? Because life happens, right? Here’s how our cancellation policy works:

➡️ Request a refund 30 or more days before the start of the workshop:

Full refund, minus the non-refundable Eventbrite fee (for details, see below)

➡️ Request a refund 15-30 days before the start of the workshop:

50% refund, minus the non-refundable Eventbrite fee (for details, see below)

➡️Request a refund 0-7 days before the start of the workshop:

No refund – but you can contact us to give your place to someone else, if that helps.

What's all this about "Eventbrite fees"?

We use Eventbrite to process our events and payments. Eventbrite charges a non-refundable fee per booking, so even if we are able to issue you with a refund, you will always lose the Eventbrite fee. Sorry. That’s how the system works.

SciComm Success offers practical, engaging communication training and for researchers and scientists who want to share their work with non-expert audiences.

We work with universities, research institutes, research groups, and scientific organisations, offering customised training for groups, online and face-to-face*.

We also work with conference organisers and meeting hosts, delivering practical workshops to hundreds of participants online, prior to the official meeting start.

And, as you can see, we offer open courses that individuals can attend when there isn't budget or need or a dedicated course: our participants join us online from all over the world and include students, academics, researchers, scientists AND the good people who support their work.

Learn more at scicommsuccess.com.
