Practical presentation skills for scientists & researchers (virtual, Zoom)

SciComm Success

Learn how to plan, structure, & deliver presentations clearly & confidently, online & in person, without nerves, using your natural style.

Focus: planning, structure, content, deliveryWhen it comes to being an engaging and effective speaker or presenter, your success depends on your planning and how you turn your planning into a well-structured, clearly-delivered presentation. That’s what this workshop is all about. In the first part of the workshop, we’ll cover the basics of communication (something we all-too-often forget!). Then we’ll focus on your audience, planning your key message, and how to create a simple structure for your presentation. In the second part of the workshop, we’ll work on the content of your presentation, thinking about your language, using stories and anecdotes, and techniques to bring your message to life. Then we’ll focus on your delivery skills and help you harness your natural ability so that you can present and speak clearly, confidently, and authentically. In the final part of the workshop, we’ll put everything together and you’ll have an opportunity to try out all your learnings, receive feedback, and offer feedback to others. This gives you an unparalleled opportunity to try new things in a safe space, and learn from peers as well. We’ll also discuss how to keep nerves at bay, how to manage questions, and how to use the simple templates we provide to practice, practice, practice! The workshop will include a mix of theory, group discussions, individual exercises, and practical, hands-on work. To embed your learning, you will be invited to do some individual exercises between each session so that you can put your learning into practice and receive feedback on your progress.
