Ecstatic repetition, hypnotic rhythms & collective chaos: an all-star ensemble celebrates the radical sound world of Julius Eastman.

Reaktor

<h2>"STAY ON IT" The Music from Julius Eastman</h2> Led by music director Brian Lawlor, a 17-musician ensemble performs Eastman’s landmark works Femenine—with its shimmering sleigh bells and slowly shifting sonic landscape—and the exuberant, groove-driven Stay On It.

A singular figure in the New York experimental music scene of the 1970s and 80s, Eastman created a bold and unmistakable musical language—hypnotic, exuberant, and politically charged. His works combine the pulsing repetition of minimalism with improvisation, pop influence, and a powerful sense of collective musical energy. The program also includes screenings of the films Joy Boy: a tribute to Julius Eastman and A Different Score, illuminating Eastman’s life, artistry, and lasting influence. JOY BOY, a tribute to Julius Eastman
(63’, 2026, BE, DRC, FR)
a film by Paul Shemisi, Anne Reijniers, Victoire Karera Kampire, Fallon Mayanja, Mawena Yehouessi & Rob Jacobs.

"JOY BOY" is a constellation of filmic, choreographic, and sonic expressions inspired by revolutionary musician and activist Julius Eastman’s life and work. His music — which he described as ‘organic’ — was known for its slow, cumulative structure, often bearing politically charged titles such as Evil Nigger, Gay Guerrilla, or Joy Boy, marking both a radical compositional stance and an uncompromising political gesture. Unfolding through four chapters dedicated to four musical pieces, the film is threaded with a layered montage of Eastman’s voice - interludes that connect each part and echo his visionary presence.
