Wojciech Setlak
Writer and narrative designer at 11 bit studios, Warsaw
Apart from propagandists and copywriters, not many authors sit at their keyboards with the explicit goal of changing the minds of their readers, and game writers are no exception, quite the opposite. And yet games have no less potential to influence opinions than other forms of expression, particularly among young people who prefer games over more traditional media. What values should they convey, and how should they do it? These were among the questions the creative team at 11 bit studios strove to answer every day when working on their games “This War of Mine”, which is used as a teaching aid in Norway and became part of national curriculum in Poland, and “Frostpunk”, which caused fierce debates about totalitarianism, with some Chinese gamers holding it as a proof of their country’s superiority.
Biography
Wojciech Setlak joined 11 bit studios as a writer and narrative designer in 2014. He took part in design and development of “This War of Mine”, “This War of Mine: The Little Ones” and now he’s on the team working on the company’s latest game, “Frostpunk”. His experience with personal computing since 1983 (Apple IIe) always involved words and communication – from sharing programs he wrote at the computer club, writing short stories and connecting to the BBS systems via a 1200 band modem to editing magazines read by hundreds of thousands of game fans and connecting to other lovers of long words on MetaFilter.
