Translation and Cosmovision(s): A meaningful alliance?

Institut für Translationswissenschaft | Uni Graz

We engage in a transdisciplinary debate on the relevance of linking translation to cosmovisions.

In the research project “Towards a Cosmovision Turn – Challenging Basic Translation Theory”, we examine translation in indigenous communities such as the Waorani, hunters and gatherers of Ecuador’s Amazon rainforest, as political acts that take place not only between cultures but between converging and diverging ways of perceiving world(s) and acting in them (“cosmovisions”, Consejo Regional del Cauca 2004, 83). In this event, we engage in debates on the relevance of linking translation not only to cultures but to cosmovisions. We call for an exchange of points of view by representatives of Translation Studies but also from our adjacent disciplines such as Cultural Anthropology, Sociology, Sociolinguistics or Human Geography.
