Wie kann Kunst neue Perspektiven auf Umwelt und Zusammenleben eröffnen? Jenny Marketou spricht darüber bei einem öffentlichen Artist Talk.

Sie ist bildende Künstlerin, Forscherin und Professorin an der New School for Social Research in New York. In diesem Gespräch spricht sie über die Ideen und Hintergründe ihres Kunstprojekts Inside the Belly of a Garden, das direkt am von Menschen geschaffenen Asperner See liegt – einem beliebten Treffpunkt im Alltag der Menschen in der Seestadt.

Das Kunstwerk besteht aus einem zehn Meter langen Holzboot (einer Zille), das aus recyceltem Material gebaut und in einen lebenden Garten verwandelt wurde. Es verbindet Skulptur und Natur, Boot und Rückzugsort – und schafft ein kleines, lebendiges Ökosystem mit Pflanzen und einem kleinen Stadtstrand.

In ihrem Projekt beschäftigt sich Marketou mit der Bedeutung von Wasser – nicht nur als natürliche Ressource, sondern als lebendige Kraft mit Erinnerung und Einfluss. Sie zeigt, wie Kunst auf Umweltfragen reagieren und neue Sichtweisen eröffnen kann. Das Garten-Boot wird dabei zu einem „dritten Ort“, an dem Menschen, Pflanzen und andere Lebewesen in der Seestadt miteinander in Verbindung treten können.

How can art offer new ways of looking at our environment and how we live together? Jenny Marketou explores this question in a public artist talk.

She is a visual artist, researcher, and professor at The New School for Social Research in New York. In this talk, she will share the ideas and inspirations behind her public art project Inside the Belly of a Garden, located by the human-made Aspern Lake – a popular meeting point in the daily life of the Seestadt community in Vienna.

The artwork features a 10-meter-long reclaimed wooden Zille boat, transformed into a living garden. Blending sculpture and nature, boat and retreat, it creates a small, vibrant ecosystem surrounded by lush plants and a tiny urban beach.

In this project, Marketou explores the meaning of water – not just as a natural resource, but as a living force with memory, presence, and impact. She shows how art can respond to environmental challenges and open up new perspectives. The garden-boat becomes a “third space,” where people, plants, and other living beings in Seestadt can come into contact and connect.
