What the X?! The social media landscape for scientists & researchers 2023

SciComm Success

An interactive session for researchers, scientists & academics who want to think more strategically about communicating on social media.

The social media landscape is changing rapidly, so where should researchers and scientists invest their time and energy?

The bird has flown and has been replaced by an X. Mastodon is a lovely idea but seems a bit complicated. Bluesky is still in Beta. Imaging social media platform Instagram now has “Threads”. Short-form video platform TikTok now has a text-only posts feature.

What’s going on? Where on earth should researchers invest their time and energy if they want to use social media to talk about their work? And what can they do to be more efficient and share data on multiple platforms – just in case?

In this interactive 90-minute session, we’ll explore:

The current social media landscape.

Which channel is right for what purpose.

What other researchers are using – and how that might be changing.

How to think strategically about where to invest your time on social media.

Tools to boost your productivity.

Where new generative AI tools (like ChatGPT) can help (or hinder) your efforts.

What you'll learn in this session

By the end of this fast-paced, fun session, you will have a better understanding of where to focus your time and energy in sharing your work via social media, and how to do this as efficiently as possible. Whether you have been using social media for years, or you are mulling over whether to start using it for your science and research communication, you’re sure to come away with a few ideas that you can apply to your work.

What you'll get AFTER the workshop

We will provide you with a recording of the session (minus breakout rooms), plus useful notes, a list of any resources mentioned, and copies of any templates that we provide during the session. If for any reason you can't join us on the day, you'll be able to access the information and exercises in your own time.

What this workshop ISN’T

This session is not designed to get started with using social media for your research.

If you want to learn how to use social media on a practical level, including how to plan for success, create all the content you need to set up your profile(s), create a mini social-media campaign (to get you started), and create content for your first couple of social media posts, check out this workshop:

From social media planning to getting ready to share your first post.

Technology and other requirements for this session

To participate in this mini-workshop, you’ll need a decent internet connect, a mic (so that you can talk to us), and it would be great if you had video access too, so that we can see you when you talk (although this isn’t essential) - this last requirement will make it MUCH easier for you to communicate in breakout sessions.

Run this workshop in-house

This workshop can also be offered for your university, research group and groups involved with the art of bringing research to a wider audience in scientific, research and academic organisations.
Meet Suzanne Whitby, your workshop leader

This workshop will be led by Suzanne Whitby. Suzanne is the founder of SciComm Success and runs workshops to help scientists and researchers share their work with non-experts.

She is also a sustainability and climate change communicator, and in her academic life, she researchers how multi-sensory, storied, landscape-based approaches to climate communication can engage, shift attitudes and drive action.

If you book a place on this workshop, rest assured that it will run. Even if you’re the only person who signs up.

If that happens, you’ll receive a one-to-one session that will cover everything planned in the session, with the chance to get individual input and ideas with no extra charges or hidden fees. We might need a little less time, or we may decide to use the full 90 minutes. That means that you’ll receive the value of a private workshop for the price of a place on a group workshop – you can’t go wrong by signing up.

* The only time we cancel a workshop is if we’re horribly ill or life intervenes in an unexpected way. If that happens, you’ll receive a full refund. We never cancel because of too few people.

Cancellation and refund policy

If we cancel:

We only cancel events in extreme situations (illness, unexpected life events). If we do, you will receive a 100% refund.

If you cancel:

What happens if you need to cancel? Because life happens, right? Here’s how our cancellation policy works:

➡️ Request a refund 30 or more days before the start of the workshop:

Full refund, minus the non-refundable Eventbrite fee (for details, see below)

➡️ Request a refund 15-30 days before the start of the workshop:

50% refund, minus the non-refundable Eventbrite fee (for details, see below)

➡️Request a refund 0-7 days before the start of the workshop:

No refund – but you can contact us to give your place to someone else, if that helps.

What's all this about "Eventbrite fees"?

We use Eventbrite to process our events and payments. Eventbrite charges a non-refundable fee per booking, so even if we are able to issue you with a refund, you will always lose the Eventbrite fee. Sorry. That’s how the system works.

SciComm Success offers practical, engaging communication training and for researchers and scientists who want to share their work with non-expert audiences.

We work with universities, research institutes, research groups, and scientific organisations, offering customised training for groups, online and face-to-face*.

We also work with conference organisers and meeting hosts, delivering practical workshops to hundreds of participants online, prior to the official meeting start.

And, as you can see, we offer open courses that individuals can attend when there isn't budget or need or a dedicated course: our participants join us online from all over the world and include students, academics, researchers, scientists AND the good people who support their work.

Learn more at scicommsuccess.com.
