Working with images in your research and science communication

SciComm Success

This mini-workshop is all about images: why they matter, where to find them, how to edit them, how to enhance them & use them effectively.

A picture says more than a thousand words, or so it’s said. It’s time to make better use of images in your research and science communication and bring your message to life.

Perhaps you like using text but want to know why images matter and how to use them. Perhaps you are already a big fan of using images, but you’d like to know more about what to be aware of, where to find images, what formats to use (and when to use them!) and how to edit them using free tools.

In this fast-paced mini-workshop, you’ll learn how to find, edit and use images in their science and research communication. We’ll cover:

Why visuals matter

Different types of images that we use

Pros and cons of different formats

Free -> royalty-free -> free and paid royalty-free

Where to find free images and icons

How to edit images using free tools

PLUS: we’ll offer extra tips throughout the session based on what you want to do with your images.

This is a hands-on session, so you will be working with the internet, images and online tools throughout. There will be ample time for questions and answers, too, so that you can satisfy your curiosity AND learn from what others want to know.

What you'll get AFTER the workshop

We will provide you with a recording of the session (minus breakout rooms), plus useful notes, a list of any resources mentioned, and copies of any templates that we provide during the session. If for any reason you can't join us on the day, you'll be able to access the information and exercises in your own time.

Who this workshop ISN’T for:

Anyone who considers themselves a guru when it comes to using images.

Researchers, scientists and academics with a background in graphic design.

Anyone is already finding, editing and using images without any challenges.

You know who you are :)

Technology and other requirements for this workshop

To participate in this mini-workshop, you’ll need a decent internet connection, a mic (so that you can talk to us), and it would be great if you had video access too, so that we can see you when you talk (although this isn’t essential).

In addition, you will need to be able to download working files that we provide and you need to have access to your email, as you may need to verify an account sign-up (free, don't worry) as part of the session.

Run this workshop in-house

This workshop can also be offered for your university, research group and groups involved with the art of bringing research to a wider audience in scientific, research and academic organisations. She has been a communication professional for 25+ years and has been helping scientists and researchers build communication skills since 2014.

She is also a sustainability and climate change communicator, and in her academic life, she researches how multi-sensory, storied, landscape-based approaches to climate communication can engage, shift attitudes and drive action.

Cancellation and refund policy

If we cancel:

We only cancel events in extreme situations (illness, unexpected life events). If we do, you will receive a 100% refund.

If you cancel:

What happens if you need to cancel? Because life happens, right? Here’s how our cancellation policy works:

➡️ Request a refund 30 or more days before the start of the workshop:

Full refund, minus the non-refundable Eventbrite fee (for details, see below)

➡️ Request a refund 15-30 days before the start of the workshop:

50% refund, minus the non-refundable Eventbrite fee (for details, see below)

➡️ Request a refund 0-7 days before the start of the workshop:

No refund – but you can contact us to give your place to someone else, if that helps.

What's all this about "Eventbrite fees"?

We use Eventbrite to process our events and payments. Eventbrite charges a non-refundable fee per booking, so even if we are able to issue you with a refund, you will always lose the Eventbrite fee. Sorry. That’s how the system works.
