Woolly Worm Festival
For over 40 years, the Woolly Worm Festival has been a beloved tradition in Banner Elk, North Carolina, drawing more than 20,000 visitors each October to celebrate small-town charm, mountain culture, and the legendary weather-forecasting woolly worm. Co-sponsored by the Avery County Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club of Banner Elk, this family-friendly event blends quirky fun with a mission to give back. All festival proceeds are reinvested into the local community—supporting schools, children’s programs, and tourism initiatives throughout Avery County.
Founded in the late 1970s after local legend Jim Morton combined his fascination with Appalachian folklore and a need for a community event, the festival quickly became one of the High Country’s most anticipated gatherings. Today, guests enjoy two days of woolly worm racing, 160+ craft and food vendors, live entertainment, and the chance to win $1,000 and the honor of making the official High Country winter forecast. Whether you come to race a worm, shop local artisans, or simply soak in the crisp mountain air, the Woolly Worm Festival is an unforgettable slice of North Carolina tradition.
