Kirklees Adult Cycle Training
West Yorkshire Combined Authority is providing funding for free adult cycle training across Kirklees. The sessions are for anyone aged 16+ and bikes and helmets are available to borrow if you don’t have your own. Sessions are run by qualified instructors and rider leaders who have vast experience in helping people get riding and become more confident on two wheels.
These are the training partners who deliver the training across north and south Kirklees:
- Colne Valley Cycle Therapy CIC – Slaithwaite; Huddersfield (Leeds Rd Sports Complex) - CVCT runs a series of friendly cycle training sessions from learn to ride, through to commuter road riding and holds a series of guided rides around Kirklees. Don't worry if you don't have a bike, we have plenty available to borrow. We also have some e-bikes available, so look out for our special e-bike try-out sessions and see how they 'flatten' our wonderful Kirklees hills. Scroll down to see what events are on at the moment.
- Hop-On – Spen Track, Cleckheaton - Hop-On is a community cycling organisation. They offer a range of cycle training sessions for beginners and returning riders. They run friendly, supportive sessions where you can learn at your own pace and just enjoy being part of a group. If you have your own bike, just book a place on Eventbrite and come along. If you need to borrow a bike for any Hop-Op sessions, please follow the booking instructions here: https://hopon.bike/book-session/
What’s on offer
Learn to Ride/Beginners – for complete beginners and those returning to riding after a long spell away. Our instructors will work on balance and gliding before introducing pedals and give lots of handy tips to develop balance and co-ordination.
Improvers - Learning how to ride in quiet traffic – those looking to commute will learn how to look around whilst riding and learn how to signal. Once this been mastered, sessions will move to quiet local roads to look at priorities at junctions, safe road riding positions to control traffic and hazards to look out for and deal with.
Commuter riding – these are 1-1 sessions with an instructor where a particular route can be planned and ridden together. This might be from home to work, shops, college, etc. Instructors also know good quiet routes and short cuts to help those new to commuting potentially find easier routes. Please contact the training provider directly for more details.
Guided wellbeing rides – the wellbeing rides are great for mental and physical health and we find people enjoy cycling as part of a regular group. Rides are generally on traffic-free routes and any road riding is managed by the ride leader.
Basic Bike Maintenance – these sessions look at how to check that the bike is safe to ride, how to mend a puncture and how to fit a new inner tube. Our instructors are also happy to give lots of other handy hints and information about all things bikes.
Advanced Bike Maintenance – a more in depth look at the workings of the bike. Includes replacing brake pads, indexing gears, replacing chains and bearings, etc.
